Asparagus bed update...

One of the few jobs I have done recently is cutting down the Asparagus haulm. I am intending to finish the raised bed and add a thick layer of manure before the season begins. I am having quite a lot of trouble with weeds in this bed due to it being
permanent and am wondering about covering the spaces between plants to try and minimise the problem.

Hi,we covered our asparagus bed with a layer of seaweed in the autumn.Weeds are also a problem as I am afraid to dig out too deeply in case I damage the crowns. Would a mulch of well rotted horse manure be OK? This is year 3 of our bed and the first year we will actually be cutting it to eat so I don't want to lose it at this stage!
You have done great work on the beds, it looks great so far.

Hi Peggy - thanks for your comment. I am intending to cover the whole lot with a few inches of manure. I can't see a problem with what you are intending. This will help with annual weeds but perennials such as horsetail and couch grass are more of a problem. I try and cut them to soil level as soon as I spot them (Easier when harvesting the spears than later when the plants have grown). Good luck with it :-)

An asparagus bed is one of my jobs for the next few weeks. Any tips on starting one off? I'm going to do a little raised bed like yours but other than that I'm clueless... :)
