Lottie Update (Pics taken 20th Feb)

As you can see from this view, I still haven't cut back the Asparagus. The chives are sprouting happily, though!

There is a lot of cutting back to do here as well. The bush in the centre is a blackcurrent, and I am planning to cut it right back this year and use it as a biennial. I have the transplanted bush from Ivan's which I hope will fruit this year ready for cutting down next and so on. I got this idea from Geoff Hamilton. He says it produces very large yields.

The garlic is still looking healthy under the chicken wire.

I think I should cut back all this foliage from the strawberries asap. Is this a good idea or not??? Advice gratefully welcomed.

I cut mine back to give the new shoots a chance to grow. The frost does not usually affect them, and if it did they romp away again.

Looks like a really good breeding ground for slugs at the moment, sorry to say - and you could do with digging out the old parent plants that are two years old, and digging up the runners and replanting them - it will be worth it as you should get a bigger and better crop

All the little sprouts look great! I tried asapragus once and failed miserably, though yours is inspiring me to try again. I enjoy seeing all of your garden structures and raised bed frames.

I suppose looking at it I should do a bit of work on the strawbs. Thanks for the advice, AL:)

Good luck with the asparagus, CG (if I may call you that. It really is wonderful for that 6 weeks or so when you can eat it every day, more or less.

I'm envious of all those paving flags. I am trying to define raised beds on our plot with reclaimed paving flags but goodness me, you need a lot. I'm too environmentally resposible (read "cheap") to buy any for the purpose, but it's hard work finding them otherwise.

These flags are old ones from my Mum & Dad's garden whichhave already been on the allotment a few years. I took them up to relay over groundcover but have rather put off getting round to it.
All the best, Mike
